CREATED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH ESPA SKINCARE
When cold weather hits, our wardrobe isn’t the only thing that gets an overhaul. But when it comes to making seasonal skincare swaps, common beauty myths can make the transition more complicated. We caught up with the skin experts at ESPA to find out the truth about winter skincare…
MYTH: The thicker the cream, the better it hydrates
TRUTH: Concentrated doesn’t necessarily equal optimum hydration. An overdose of lipids – a common ingredient in many skincare products designed to restore moisture to the skin – can actually trap dead skin cells and leave skin looking dull. Instead, try layering serums under creams for a real hydration hit. Try Optimal Skin ProSerum, an antioxidant and omega-rich complex to smooth and firm, or the hard-working Tri-Active™ Advanced Night Booster, which works to intensify the skin’s natural overnight renewal cycle for more radiant, line-free skin.
MYTH: Cloudy days don’t warrant SPF
TRUTH: Did you know clouds block as little as 20% of damaging UV rays? Even on the dullest days in the depths of winter, it’s crucial to use an SPF to protect your skin. Come winter, incorporate the lightweight Optimal Skin ProDefence SPF15 into your skincare arsenal, which will guard against environmental damage, as well as the Naturally Radiant Tinted Moisturiser SPF15 for off-duty days.
MYTH: Oily skin doesn’t need moisturiser
TRUTH: Think again. Dry, cold climates can take their toll on all skin types – even oily. If your skin is particularly oily, we highly recommend you make a bee-line for the 24-Hour Balancing Moisturiser, a gentle formula packed with white thyme to balance and lavender and chamomile to soothe – it’s even suitable for acne-prone skin types, too. To keep oily skin refreshed throughout the day, try misting Balancing Herbal Spafresh over or under make-up.
MYTH: Exfoliating in winter exacerbates dry patches
TRUTH: Not necessarily. When done correctly, exfoliating in winter is the key to a radiant complexion as it helps to slough off dead skin cells and promote a healthy glow. We love the Refining Skin Polish – a botanical blend of rose, shea butter and clay to help clear pores, lift impurities and restore radiance to even the most lacklustre of complexions.
MYTH: Loading up on lip balm will prevent chapping
TRUTH: Only if it’s the right balm. Be wary of formulas that contain petroleum jelly – this creates an artificial film on the lips, signalling your skin to stop producing lipids, while perfumes, flavours and colours can also dry out the skin. Instead, arm yourself with the Pink Pomelo Lip Balm, or use the Nourishing Lip Treatment as an overnight treat for a more kissable pout.
MYTH: Being exposed to the elements gives your skin a natural glow
TRUTH: That post-winter-walk rosy glow may look cute, but exposure to harsh winds can wreak havoc on sensitive skin. If your skin is delicate and prone to redness, load up on a protective-barrier moisturiser – we love the Repair and Restore Moisturiser.
MYTH: Steamy showers impart moisture to dry skin
TRUTH: A hot, steamy shower may seem like the ultimate antidote to a cold day, but exposing the skin to excessive temperatures can trigger water loss throughout the entire epidermis. If you crave heat, keep your shower short and sweet and stick with an oil-rich cleanser like the Nourishing Shower Cream, which will keep limbs supple and soft thanks to a blend of sweet almond oil and shea butter.
MYTH: Oils will make my skin oily
TRUTH: This isn’t true. If your skin is combination or oily, don’t be afraid to use an oil directly on your face – just remember it’s quality not quantity. A good-quality oil – we give our full marks to the cult Balancing Face Treatment Oil, which can actually stop the skin from over-producing oil for a clearer complexion. Meanwhile, dry and sensitive skin will lap up the Regenerating Face Treatment Oil, just remember to massage into the skin for the best results.
