Londoners go nuts for a cool and quirky pop-up – from cereal cafés to cheese dens, dining out is never a dull affair. So it comes as no surprise the latest addition to the capital’s rich culinary landscape is in the form of a psychedelic floating barge. And not just any floating barge, this canalside bar and eatery, from the brains behind the Daisy Green Collection, has been designed by iconic pop artist Sir Peter Blake – best known for the cover of the Beatles album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.
With their zany 60s motif, the two vessels, called Darcie Green and May Green, will transport diners right back to the swinging sixties, offering a taste of vintage style in the quaint setting of Paddington Central.
The barges will offer two types of dining experiences: May Green – a laid-back café and exhibition space where culture vultures can get their caffeine fix; and Daisy Green – a cool waterside dining spot serving up an all-day menu of fresh Aussie-inspired classics. Tuck into hearty dishes of Szechuan soft-shell; crab; giant chicken parmigiana; and charcoal grilled lamb flat bread; alongside lighter dishes of vegan poke bowls and Asian chicken salads, with bottomless brunches and afternoon teas served up on the weekends. Cocktails come in the form of guava bellinis, a quirky twist on an espresso martini, and moreish Champagne coolers, with an additional selection of craft beers and natural New World wines.
Stalwarts on the street food scene, Daisy Green, founded by Australian-born Prue Freeman, started out selling frozen, natural fat-free yoghurts from a 1975 Ford Transit van – today they have a fleet of different bikes, carts and vans – at various festivals and street food sites including Kerb at King’s Cross. Prue now has six celebrated cafés and restaurants under her belt, each specialising in deliciously healthy Antipodean (Australian and New Zealand-inspired) cuisine.
Promising hearty, flavoursome food in the coolest of surroundings, we predict this slick waterside hangout to be a big hit. We can’t wait to step aboard.
