Despite recent statistics suggesting women are twice as likely to perform oral sex as men, research also shows only a third of women actually enjoy the deed. From easy ways to improve your technique, to tips on boosting confidence, we sat down with Superdrug sexpert Alix Fox for the lowdown on how to go down...

Remember Foreplay

When it comes to oral sex, don’t neglect foreplay. Take your time to build anticipation and desire to ensure you’re both equally turned on – this will lead to a better experience for both of you. If you’re with someone new, foreplay involving kissing, licking, stroking and breathing on his stomach and thighs will allow you to check out what you’re working with and what he likes.

Make Eye Contact

Making eye contact during oral sex may be intimidating, but he’ll love every second of it. Warning though – this move is super intimate as extended eye contact triggers a release of oxytocin, the bonding hormone, in both of you. Use this move with caution and only with someone you’re ready to take it to a new level with.

Go Hot and Cold

Playing with temperature and sensations is a really simple way to up your game. Try taking a mouthful of warm tea, swill it around your mouth and swallow before taking your man’s penis into your mouth for 20 seconds; then take a mouthful of cold water and do the same. You can also try Champagne and ice for extra unexpected sensations.

Use Your Hands

If your partner’s penis is on the large size, you may find blow jobs trickier to perform. Remember it’s okay to use your hands and mouth together. Use some lube or your saliva on your hands to start before adding your mouth. As some men approach orgasm, they can tend to thrust more deeply – if you don’t feel comfortable, remember it’s okay to pull back and tell him to slow down.

Find Sensitive Areas

The head of the penis and the part just beneath it (the frenulum) contain the most nerve endings and are therefore the most sensitive areas. If you fear gagging or the sensation of having too much in your mouth, remember you can concentrate on these areas (as well as the perineum – the secret spot between the testicles and the anus) to bring him pleasure.

Try Lube

Keeping a tube of lube nearby when giving a blow job is useful if you get jaw ache or struggle to produce enough saliva for a smooth feeling. Plus, using lube means you can always turn to your hands if you’re struggling.

Compliment Him

Think about it – it turns you on when he says what he likes about you, so do the same. While it may feel awkward at first, remember words can be very sexy and powerful.

Stick to a Rhythm

Once you’ve warmed up and found a pace and movement that your partner likes, stick to it for a while if you’re comfortable doing so – although variety keeps things interesting, most men need consistency and a regular rhythm to make them orgasm. You could also experiment with ‘edging’ – keeping up a regular rhythm until you sense he is close to orgasm; at this point, pause for a few seconds before starting again to build up sensation.
